🐴 Sally — Our Beloved Circus Retiree

Sally is a spirited 30-something-year-old Shetland pony who has found her well-deserved retirement at Pride & Joy Rescue. Once a circus pony ring, she now enjoys a peaceful life surrounded by love and gentle care. Though she is blind and lives with PPID (Cushing’s Disease), her joyful personality and resilience shine every day.

While Sally still has all her teeth, they’re worn down with age, so she receives soaked forage several times a day to maintain her health and weight. Despite her challenges, she’s thriving—curious, lively, and adored by everyone at the rescue. Sally is also a favorite among our young and new volunteers, who learn the basics of equine care through her patient and trusting nature.

🐴 Gunnar — Our First “40” Program Recipient

Gunnar holds a special place in our hearts as the very first recipient of the “40” Program, named in honor of the horse who inspired it. When Gunnar arrived at Pride & Joy Rescue, he was severely underweight and struggling with dental issues. Though he still has most of his teeth, many are worn down from age, and he’s estimated to be around 40 years old—a true senior gentleman.

Like Sally, Gunnar requires soaked forage several times a day, along with 24/7 access to hay and fresh water. He’s a classic older horse who knows exactly what he wants: his meals, his comfort, and of course—plenty of treats and attention.

Under the staff's care and the rescue’s specialized senior feeding program, Gunnar is thriving. His weight is nearly where it needs to be, and with continued love and nourishment, we have no doubt he’ll continue to improve and enjoy his golden years surrounded by compassion and care..

🌸 Flower — Our Brave Fighter

Flower is a sweet and gentle mare whose loving former owner wanted nothing but the best for her, no matter what that meant. She came to Pride & Joy Rescue with a severe case of heaves (COPD), and the 2025 season brought some of the toughest breathing conditions we’ve seen in years.

With ongoing veterinary care, constant monitoring, and around-the-clock, forage-based feedings, Flower receives the specialized support she needs to stay comfortable. She also receives medications and regular breathing treatments to help her manage her condition.

Connie stays in close contact with our veterinary team, ensuring Flower’s care plan adjusts daily as needed. Despite her challenges, Flower continues to show her gentle heart and resilient spirit—and we’re hopeful that with the cooler weather and continued care, she’ll soon find some well-deserved relief.
